Founded in the 1930’s by the Swedish Ministry of Education, ASSE and World Heritage International Student Exchange Programs, a non-profit, public benefit organization, is dedicated to fostering global understanding, cultural exchange, and personal growth by facilitating international exchange programs around the world. Through its mission, ASSE creates life-changing opportunities for young people to experience different cultures, learn new perspectives, and develop lifelong friendships. By living with host families and attending local high schools, in the USA and abroad, students immerse themselves in a new environment that challenges and expands their worldview.

With decades of experience in student exchange programs, ASSE International is a trusted name in cultural exchange. Committed not only to education but also to creating ambassadors of peace and understanding. ASSE Programs and services span other Exchange Programs not evaluated by CSIET, such as Summer Work Travel, Au Pair, Intern/Trainee, University Scholarships, and a leading Study Abroad program, giving American students the opportunity to spend a high school year, semester, or summer in one of 30+ countries worldwide. With affordable fees and full and partial scholarships available, students can choose their preferred destination without the need for prior language experience.

ASSE believes that by encouraging cultural exchange, we can build a more peaceful, compassionate, and inclusive global community. The skills and memories gained through the exchange experience empower students to become engaged citizens, ready to take on the challenges of a globalized society. Through the ASSE mission, we’re not just exchanging students; we’re exchanging ideas, compassion, and hope for a better future. The experience is equally invaluable for host families, local communities, and participating high schools.

Academic Year or Semester in North America— Foreign students ages 15 to 18 spend a semester or year living with families, attending a North American high school, learning North American culture and language while sharing their own language and culture. The students, who must have completed at least three years of English language study, are screened by school administrators, teachers, and experienced ASSE/WH representatives overseas. Welcoming host families participate in the selection of the student who will live in their home, choosing from over 60 countries worldwide, and orientation is provided to host families prior to the student’s arrival. ASSE’s global network of area representatives conduct orientation meetings for students prior to departure from their home country and upon arrival; monitor the student’s adjustment to the family, school, and community on at least a monthly basis; and organize recreational and social activities for the students and host families.

Each exchange student becomes a bridge between their home country and the host community, sharing their own culture while learning about others in return. These transformative experiences shape students into confident, empathetic leaders who are equipped to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.
