The School District of Janesville is a public educational system located in south-central Wisconsin, USA, that serves approximately 10,000 students from kindergarten to 12th grade. Within the District, the Janesville International Education Program (JIEP) was established in 2013 with a mission to provide diverse cultural experiences, preparing students to live their lives as well-informed global citizens. Tomorrow’s leaders start with today’s students. Now more than ever we believe in the power of international student immersion experiences to build cross-cultural understanding while expanding participants’ world view and global competence.
We welcome program participants from around the world, inclusive of all backgrounds, cultures, and beliefs. We encourage all students to learn with, and from, each other, recognizing and respecting each other’s cultural and experiential differences. It is our foundational belief that sharing heritage, customs, and personal experiences enriches the learning environment for everyone, and supports our goal of preparing students to thrive as global citizens.
Academic Year Program – United States— JIEP offers an inbound high school academic year program in which F-1 students reside with local host families. Our host family network offers a variety of cultural, community, and non-academic immersion experiences to international students in a safe and caring home environment. While enrolled in one of our local high schools, students will have opportunities to build dual language competency, facilitate authentic friendships, and enjoy a rich academic experience. All aspects of the program are overseen by a full-time local coordinator and supported by an international school counselor and program director.
International students ages 15 to 18 are eligible to apply to attend school for one semester or a full academic year while earning academic credit from one of our local high schools. Year 12 students are eligible to earn a high school diploma upon successful completion of graduation requirements. Students must complete an application in English, demonstrate English proficiency at a level required to be successful in high school coursework, and demonstrate a history of academic success as part of the admission process. Upon arrival in the U.S., students are required to attend an in-depth orientation program. The orientation, which is held in August, addresses a variety of topics, including: American culture, English language, program rules, student safety, and how to make the most of the U.S. high school experience.
