California Treatment of Independent Contractors

Dear CSIET J-1 Sponsors,

I am pleased to announce we just received word that the Governor of California signed CA AB 2257 into law. This law exempts J-1 program representatives from the employee status that was originally outlined in CA AB 5. Our thanks go out to all those programs who signed CSIET’s letter to California Assemblywoman Gonzalez.  I should also mention Marc Burgat, President of MB Advocacy LLC.  Mr. Burgat was a key figure in the effort to include this exception in the new legislation.  We would also like to thank ASSE for their contribution to the success of this advocacy initiative. Finally, a special thanks to International Student Exchange (ISE) for their final push to get this across the finish line.
