This session begins by exploring the effects of culture shock on the mental health of international/exchange students. Cultural Adaptation Trainer, Brenda Padilla Ericksen, will moderate a panel of psychologists who will discuss ways to promote mental wellness when a student struggles with challenging culture shock emotions such as sadness, anxiety and frustration. They will also address red flags that indicate a student is experiencing issues that require professional attention. A workshop will follow, facilitated by Dr. Francisco José Estupiñá, who coordinates the student crisis line at Madrid’s Complutense University. Symposium participants will discuss real life cases and practice techniques designed to provide support and emotional first aid to students in distress.
